Publish On : 07-07-2025

Introduction

The UAE’s vibrant food and beverage sector—including restaurants, cafes, cloud kitchens, food trucks, catering services, and packaged food suppliers—is heavily impacted by Value Added Tax (VAT). Understanding how VAT applies across different business models is key to ensuring compliance and managing costs effectively.

Here we explains the VAT treatment of food sales, dine-in services, supplies, and input tax recovery for the F&B industry.

1. Is VAT Applicable in the F&B Industry?

3. VAT Registration for F&B Businesses

VAT registration is mandatory if your business generates more than AED 375,000/year in taxable supplies.

✅ Includes:

• Restaurants, cafes

• Delivery-based cloud kitchens

• Catering companies

• Packaged food producers or resellers

Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500 onwards.

4. VAT on Food Delivery Apps & Aggregators

If you list your restaurant or cloud kitchen on platforms like Talabat, Zomato, or Deliveroo:

• The restaurant is still responsible for charging and accounting for VAT on the food portion

• The delivery platform may charge service fees with VAT to the restaurant

• VAT must be separately accounted for in your books

📌 Double-check invoicing between aggregator and restaurant to ensure no VAT duplication or omission.

5. Input VAT Recovery for F&B Businesses

You can recover input VAT on:

• Raw materials and food ingredients

• Commercial kitchen equipment

• Utensils, plates, and packaging materials

• Rented premises used for preparation and service

• Electricity, gas, water used in business

• Advertising and marketing

• POS systems, cloud software, and delivery charges

🚫 Cannot recover input VAT on:

• Entertainment or hospitality for staff/clients

• Non-business expenses

• Free promotional meals unless provided under taxable marketing activity

6. VAT on Events, Catering & Buffets

Event catering, wedding buffets, or corporate food supply services are subject to 5% VAT.

If the client is VAT-registered, they may claim input VAT depending on the nature of the event:

• Business seminars: recoverable

• Staff entertainment: not recoverable

Always issue a valid tax invoice for catering services.
