📏 Rounding Off Rules for VAT Invoice Amounts in the UAE

When preparing VAT invoices in the UAE, businesses often face a practical question:

**"Can I round off VAT amounts, and if so, how should I do it?"**

To ensure accuracy and compliance with the **UAE VAT Law**, it's important to follow the Federal Tax Authority’s (FTA) accepted practices when rounding amounts on tax invoices.

---

## ✅ What the Law Says

While the **UAE VAT Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017)** does **not explicitly mandate** a rounding rule, the **FTA allows rounding** of VAT amounts **to the nearest fils (2 decimal places)**, provided that the method used is **consistent** and **reasonable**.

---

## 🔢 General Rounding Rules

### 🔹 1. **VAT Amounts Should Be Shown to 2 Decimal Places**

All VAT amounts on tax invoices should be rounded off to **two decimal places (fils)**, which is the standard monetary unit in UAE.

### 🔹 2. **Rounding to the Nearest Fils (AED 0.01)**

You may round the VAT amount as follows:

* **If the third decimal is less than 5** → round **down**

  * Example: AED 12.734 → AED **12.73**

* **If the third decimal is 5 or more** → round **up**

  * Example: AED 12.735 → AED **12.74**

### 🔹 3. **Invoice Total Can Also Be Rounded**

The **total amount payable** (including VAT) may also be rounded to two decimal places for clarity and simplicity in payment processing.

## 🧾 Sample VAT Calculation and Rounding

| Description | Amount (AED) |

| -------------------------- | ---------------- |

| Goods Total | AED 1,000.00 |

| VAT @ 5% (before rounding) | AED 50.005 |

| VAT (rounded) | AED **50.01** |

| Total Invoice Value | AED **1,050.01** |

---

## ⚠️ Important Notes

* Rounding should be applied **only after** VAT is calculated on the taxable value.

* Do **not round** unit prices or taxable base amounts — rounding applies only to the **VAT** amount and **final invoice total**.

* Apply a **consistent rounding approach** across all your invoices.

---

## 🧮 Should You Use Accounting Software?

Yes. Most **VAT-compliant accounting systems** like Finabooks, Zoho Books, QuickBooks, etc., include automated VAT rounding to ensure compliance. Make sure the software uses **standard mathematical rounding** and reflects amounts correctly in your VAT returns.

---

## 🚫 What Not to Do

* ❌ Don’t round off VAT to the nearest dirham (e.g., AED 50 instead of AED 50.01)

* ❌ Don’t round per line item unless total VAT amount is correctly adjusted

* ❌ Avoid inconsistent rounding methods across invoices
