Introduction
Even if your business has made no taxable supplies or incurred any VAT during a tax period, you are still legally required to file a Nil VAT Return with the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Failing to do so can result in penalties. In this guide, we’ll walk you through when and how to file a Nil return and why it’s important.

✅ What Is a Nil VAT Return?
A Nil VAT Return is submitted when a registered business:
• Has no sales or taxable supplies for the tax period.
• Has no taxable expenses or input VAT to claim.
• Has no other VAT obligations (like reverse charge).
Even in the absence of VAT activity, filing remains mandatory.

📅 When Should You File a Nil Return?
VAT returns in the UAE are generally filed quarterly or monthly, depending on your allocation by the FTA. You must file your Nil VAT Return within 28 days after the end of the tax period.
